Photo of the Day – Roman Baths in Bath – Reprocessed

In september 2016 we were visiting the southern part of England (UK). I shot a sequence of several bracketed exposure photographs on my tripod, capturing the interior of the roman baths and the cathedral in the background. I initially created a HDR photograph out of five bracketed shots, post-processed with Photomatix and Photoshop. But today, I have reprocessed this picture because taste evolves overtime. The initial post-processed picture’s white-balance was a bit off and that is why I thought it would be good to reprocess this image.

I have sold the previous version a couple of times already on 500px, so I guess the image as such is attractive. I really like the colours of the picture very much. So I hope this may do even better.

The Roman Baths complex is a site of historical interest in the English city of Bath. The house is a well-preserved Roman site for public bathing and surely deserves a visit.

Photo of the Day – Colourful sky above Eiffel Tower in Paris

A couple of days ago, someone asked me if it was still possible to shoot a unique picture of the Eiffel tower. This monument has been photographed a couple of billion times by now, from all angles and distances, so indeed, it is hard to make a unique picture of this magnificent piece of archtitecture.

Nevertheless, although the angle may not be that unique, I still like this image because of the nice colourful sky, combined with the construction.

Paris is absolutely one of my favourite cities. Next time I will try to find a more unique angle.

This image is created by adding a colourful sky behind the tower. The initial image was shot on a flat grey day. Composition is done in Photoshop with colour-adjustment done in lightroom.

The final result is this colourful picture of the eifel tower.

Photo of the Day – Louis Vuitton Foundation Building in Paris

The Louis Vuitton Foundation building in Paris. I have shot this picture back in 2015, but I have never got to process it.

It is a composition of about 20 separate shots, which means that the full resolution picture is huge and allows a super large print.

Paris is absolutely one of my favourite cities.

Photo of the Day – Exploring More London Riverside

London is an endless source and inspiration for new creative compositions for photographs.

One of the most known of the many magnificent landmarks in London is of course The Shard. I took this photograph a couple of years ago when visiting london with my wife.

Shot of the shard at the end of More london Riverside, from the scoop at city hall. The shard (in the distance) is a magnificent building that is really marking the skyline of London.
I absolutely need to go back for a re-shoot and get some more pictures of this great piece of architecture.

Boats on the river Durme at blue hour

Long exposures during blue hour was one of the first kind of pictures I used to experiment with when I started photography about 8 years ago. Because I have recently decided to make the Durme river one of my new photography projects, I thought it would be a great idea to go through some of my older pictures and write a blogpost about it to get the project started. Here are the two pictures I have made in 2014, I like the most.

Lokeren is the town, in East-Flanders, Belgium, where I live. The river Durme runs right through the center of the town and people like to dock their boats here in summer.

The long exposure shots took between 10 to 20 seconds depending on the light level of the evening. It also smoothed out the water movement.

Both pictures are single shots processed in Adobe Lightroom to show exactly how I have experienced the view that evening.

There are still plenty of interesting locations of this local river to discover, so I’ll be taking more pictures for this project soon.

How I shoot and edit my handheld hyperlapse

In this blogpost and in the video I will show you how I shoot and edit my handheld hyperlapses. The last couple of weeks I have been experimenting on how to make a handheld hyperlapse videos. I have learned a lot and I will point out my biggest mistakes, so you will NOT have to make the same mistakes again.

HDR Photography – Roman baths in Bath

In september 2016 we were visiting the southern part of England (UK). I shot a sequence of several bracketed exposure photographs on my tripod, capturing the interior of the roman baths and the cathedral in the background. This HDR photograph is a picture created out of five bracketed shots, post-processed with Photomatix and Photoshop.

The Roman Baths complex is a site of historical interest in the English city of Bath. The house is a well-preserved Roman site for public bathing.

Bath was founded upon natural hot springs with the steaming water playing a key role throughout its history. Lying in the heart of the city the Roman Baths were constructed around 70 AD as a grand bathing and socialising complex. It is now one of the best preserved Roman remains in the world.

Some evenings the Roman bath is lit with fires, just like in Roman times. That night it was windy and rainy, but still an ideal moment for a great shot with the lit cathedral in the background.

If you want to learn more about how I make theses kind of photographs, a good place to start is to take a look at my Free HDR Tutorial. It explains my process and is an easy to follow step by step guide.

I’d love to hear what you think about this photograph! Please let me know if you have any questions or comments.

Measuring the complete dynamic range with spot metering

Let’s go through the different steps I take to make sure to capture the whole 100% of the dynamic range and to measure the dynamic range of the scene with spot metering. Next I will show how I decide what exposures to shoot to cover this complete range of the scene.

How to use Auto Exposure Bracketing for HDR Photography

Making multiple pictures with different exposure levels is called exposure bracketing. Exposure Bracketing can be done manually and automatic depending on the possibilities of your camera. Almost all modern digital cameras have a feature called Auto Exposure Bracketing (AEB).

Post-processing cityscape of Parliament in Budapest

Today I was going through my photographs of 2014 and I stumbled upon a series of HDR photographs I took during our city trip to Budapest in March 2014. I remember it took about one hour and a half to take all the pictures during golden hour and blue hour. Hungary’s Parliament Building is situated at Pest’s riverbank. These photographs are taken on a tripod with my Sony a37 travel camera from the Buda side of the city.

A small anecdote: I remember the evening very good. I was waiting between shots and I was just looking around a bit, chatting to my wife, when a marathon runner, who was doing his daily run, came towards us at high speed. The moment I saw him, I recognised him as my colleague from work in Brussels. After a quick high-five, he continued his run. It must be a small world after all.

Post-processing of the photographs is done in Lightroom and Photoshop using three basic images of different stages of evening sky and upcoming city lights. For some reason I never post-processed these HDR photographs, but I surely like the result. It is a great riverbank view.

A quick thank you to my lovely wife for the patience and the willingness to wait just ‘that little bit longer for that amazing light coming any second now’.

Looking forward to hear your thoughts.

Happy Shooting
